Michael Robinson Chávez and Alex Kornhuber were staring at a set of perfect waves unwinding down a desert point in northern Peru when they first met. They spent two weeks surfing the world’s longest waves at Chicama. They soon discovered they had more than surfing in common; they both had a love of travel and photography. Fast forward decades later to Lima, where the two, now accomplished photographers, were teaching a workshop. Over a couple of beers they decided to bring their experience, love of travel and photography to everyone. To create journeys with a local perspective, where guests become part of the country they are photographing, not just mere observers. Hidden Planet Expeditions was born.
Alex and Michael want their guests to discover and photograph Latin America’s mysterious and wonderful corners. Guests will learn and improve their photography skills traveling with renowned talents, such as Adriana Zehbrauskas, Lynsey Addario, Moises Saman, Ron Haviv and Luca Zanetti. You want to photograph the entire journey using a smart phone? No problem. Tripod and medium format for portraits? Absolutely. There are so many ways of making images today and we can help you with all of them. During the trips we edit through your work, on a daily basis if you like, to help you master your technique. And at every expedition's end there is a fiesta where we create a slide show and present all your work on the big screen.
We keep groups small, 14 people maximum, so photo/expedition leaders have time to teach and answer everyone's questions. Some itineraries will feature 2 photo experts. And every expedition has a full time tour manager to assure a smooth and trouble free journey. Our team speaks English, Spanish, Italian, German, Portuguese and French. Our itineraries are geared for adults, 16 years old (that's an adult in Europe and Latin America!) and above. If you want to bring the kids along for an expedition check out our Custom/Family Expeditions page and contact us for more information. We want you to learn, share and have a great time on this trip. Remember, having a camera allows us a unique opportunity to explore these places in depth and our local expertise will make it a trip of a lifetime, with the photographs to prove it!
